URGENT CALL TO ACTION: 29th Sept #WeMakeEvents Peaceful Protest – Rox Event Staff

Today 29th September 2020, as the event industry is not allowed to trade until Spring 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and government restrictions, for a total of 12 months, 700 event professionals met for a peaceful protest held at Parliament Square in London, all socially distanced and with face masks. Rox Event Staff was there and here’s a report of what the #WeMakeEvents campaign is about and how we need your help.

The peaceful protest has been organised by We Stand As One #WeMakeEvents, calling for meaningful financial support from the Government until our industry is allowed to operate.

Rox Event Staff is the only event staffing agency in the U.K. that helps you take the headache out of staffing and event marketing in one place.

We operate nationwide across the U.K. with over 2,000 dynamic temporary event staff on our growing roster.

All our Event Staff took the mass gathering course by WHO, which is now mandatory for them to work with us.

We have dedicated account management, event marketers, staff’s right-to-work checks, training and skills tests on all workers, taking care of payroll too.

A bit more info about the #WeMakeEvents campaign

We’ve said it before, and we’ll repeat it…

The events industry is VITAL to the U.K. economy:
👥 Business events generate over £31bn
👩🏻‍💻 Exhibitions generate £11bn supporting 114,000 jobs
🥁 11.2 million music tourists spend £4.5bn annually

#ProjectConfidence

The events industry includes a vast supply chain ranging from production, audio, lighting and video, to logistics, planning, transportation, and some of the world’s leading technology manufacturers.

Without additional support for the supply chain, the U.K. is in danger of losing its global position as a world leader in world-class events. Moreover, all of our incredible creatives and technicians could lose their livelihoods for good.

We are calling for meaningful support from the Government until the industry is allowed to operate in a way that is not limited by social distancing policies, including:

  1. Grants – not loans – made available to businesses in the events supply chain
  2. Furlough scheme extended until the industry is back to work
  3. Extension of the self-employment scheme, tailored towards the industry
  4. Inclusion and extension of business rate reliefs until 2022
  5. Inclusion on any future job retention schemes
  6. Repurposing of D.I.T.’s international exhibitor funding scheme to be extended to domestic events
  7. Government-backed insurance schemes specific to our sector

Our industry is essential and contributes billions of pounds each year to the U.K. economy; due to COVID-19, it needs immediate help. We want our future to continue to create millions of memories with the stories to match – it’s what we do best.

Without significant and immediate support, the entire live events sector supply chain is at risk of collapse. Red Alert – Stand as O.N.E., is a campaign to raise public and media awareness in support of the live events sector which employs over circa 1,000,000 highly skilled people in the U.K., all of whom have had no work for the past four months with little likelihood of restarting until Spring 2021.

The campaign is being run by a large and growing industry collective of trade bodies, businesses and freelancers affected by the shutdown all working together. It spans online and social messaging, video, case studies and legal outdoor events to gain media attention, with specific activities having occurred on 11th August, our voice is beginning to be heard. We aim to have significant financial support extended for the people and companies in this sector until they can return to work.

The U.K. is regarded as a world-leader in delivering cultural events; Glastonbury Festival, Edinburgh Fringe and Notting Hill Carnival are household names around the globe, and spectacular events such as the 2012 Olympics opening and closing ceremonies are widely praised.

U.K. events contribute significantly to the U.K. economy and support circa one million livelihoods.

  1. According to the DCMS, the Cultural Sector’s value exceeded £100bn and was the fastest-growing sector in 2017 – DCMS press release 2018.
  2. The outdoor events industry had 141.5million visitors in 2018, spending-onsite and offsite generated around £39.5 billion, which contributes £30.4 billion in G.V.A. – Events Industry Forum report 2018.
  3. The outdoor event industry alone employs around 600,000 people; this doesn’t include theatre, music venues, corporate or any indoor events – Events Industry Forum report 2018.
  4. 72% of the industry is self-employed – U.K. Music reports 2019.
